Spin orbit torque (SOT) provides a flexible and convenient method to manipulate magnetization of a magnet, which is not only useful in magnetic random access memory applications with nonvolatility, high speed and long endurance, but also very prospective in multifunctional and reconfigurable spin logic applications. In this talk, I will first introduce the history of SOT switching study in heavy metal/single magnetic layer systems and then show some experimental results in our magnetic bilayer systems: In an exchange coupled system with an in-plane film and an out-of-plane film (T-type magnetic structure), SOT can switch the two magnetic layers independently and the switching chirality of the perpendicular layer can also be tunable by controlling the direction of the in-plane one [1]. This tunability of switching chirality can be further utilized to construct programmable spin logic devices which have several Boolean Logic functions. Furthermore, a new SOT switching scheme in the T-type coupled system [3] as well as its comparison with classic switching schemes will also be introduced. These results, especially in those CoFeB/MgO/CoFeB MTJ compatible systems, could be instructive to design multifunctional memory and logic spintronic devices.

Caihua Wan obtained his bachelor degree in Zhejiang University in 2007 and then doctoral degree in Tsinghua University in 2012. Since then, he joined Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences as a post doctor during 2012-2016 and associate professor since 2018. He has authored or contributed more than 40 peer-reviewed papers in the field of spin-orbit coupling related physics, spincaloritronics, spin injection and magnetotransport properties of semiconductor hybrid structures in the journals of Nature, Phys. Rev. Lett., Adv. Mater., Nano Lett., Phys. Rev. B, Phys. Rev. Appl., Appl. Phys. Lett., etc. Now his research interest mainly focuses on spin-orbit torque switching/dynamics, SOT-MRAM related technology development and magnonic researches.
